Trials and Tribulations (mild ones anyway) 09.08.09

We're not just designing and building our own screenprint studio but we're even making our own tools now, check out Georgias' new set square.

We will now reveal our best kept secret - Antonio Labruna, he is a nice gentlemen who we have enslaved and keep in a dark cupboard and bring out from time to time to attend to all our building needs. No, Antonio is one of those amazing people who is not even a screen-printer but is interested in helping out with the project and comes on a regular basis to get embroiled in our madness.

It can be hard work, mentally challenging and often frustrating - the amount of times one has to find tools anew each session just because they have been mislaid again, half-way through something just to realise you're missing something from the DIY store or haven't got the right tool, things just not working how you want them to - the amount of times you have to cut a piece of wood because you just keep getting the measurements wrong and just being plain overwhelmed by the lack of knowledge and having to learn something quite big from scratch. These are just some of the trials and tribulations that can come from a project like this, but one doesn't stop the smiles, sense of achievement and empowerment that one feels at the end of each day, when even just one small step of progress is made, especially when you share this feeling with a load of other crazy people.

It's been a while since this blog was able to be updated, but here's the latest from the past month or so to finally whet your appetite....

"Oh mi god we've built the frame of a wall!" exclaims the amateur builders.

Here we are putting up our L shape corner wall and insulating it.

Here is the main wall being insulated, packing it in before winter comes.

Here we are not only having put in our first window but our second one. We are putting in as many windows as we can, because the area where the space is situated is unfortunately very dark so we're maximising the light as much as possible.

Here we are having just installed our biggest window and are narcissistically in love with our handiwork. We can now pretty much give builders a run for their money.

Eric and Dan did the bestest that they could to start the wall we need to define the print space. Unfortunately after much effort, it seemed that they were not able to give anymore time. Frustrated with feeling helpless, we decided to brave it and attempt to finish it ourselves even though we were complete amateurs. The process has been fascinating, we have been soaking up as much tips and advice for a while and it felt like we were able to draw out different chunks of knowledge that we remembered, piece it together as a whole and practically do what needed to be done . Getting over that presumed limitation you impose on yourself and braving something abit unnerving or out of your comfort zone is exhilarating. In fact it was so exciting taking control and feeling self-empowered we couldn't resist doing it altogether, even though it probably didn't need so many people on the same task.

Also now that some of the wall structure is up and one can visualise more how the space will look, it is interesting how other people who are working at Coachwerks in general have in passing helped contribute a bit here, contributed a bit there. I also like to stress that the Caochwerks space as a whole has been built by volunteers, but the screen print space is the first one of it's kind to have people learning these skills almost from scratch giving it a go.

Oh yes and the digging battle to create an effective guttering trench at the back of the space continues, one more step to leakage-less heaven. We have to get as much mud as we can into a skip by the end of Wednesday so hopefully we will be able to get as much man/ woman power as we can to help do this.

18.06.09 Photo exclusive! What the diggings all about!

Here is the first ever photo of where all the digging has been taking place!

As you can see it's rather compact and bijoux, things would most certainly be a bit cosy with more than 2 or 3 people down there!
I believe there is still some way to go yet, so its a case of all hands on shovels and get digging!

Thanks again to all those that have helped with the digging so far its a pretty dirty job but once its done we will have a nice dry damp proofed back wall.

This is the finished repaired roof, hopefully with the newly taped and tar painty stuff there should be no more leaks. Only time will tell fingers crossed it will all be ok.

So thursday more digging was done( as you can see from above) and we also cut the final bits of plaster board for the back wall. Which is ready for nailing into place.

14.06.09 Building ,waterproofing and more digging!

A lot was achieved today. The all important foundation beams were screwed and nailed into the floor and the metal bar on the ceiling, which is great and hopefully once we have decided on window layouts we will be able to get cracking on finishing the 4th wall Yay!

I had ago at filling the holes on the back wall which fun I've always wanted to try my hand at filling and plastering. It's not a bad job if i do say so myself but i could do with more practice :-) Like Maggie i am also really loving all this DIY it will make the space more special once its complete as so many of us have helped to build it.

We have finally weather proofed the roof too, the girls did a splendid job in clearing it so all we had to do on Sunday was fill the holes and cracks and then paint with the rubber paint stuff. We just need to test it out with a watering can maybe to check that its all worked out ok!

The boys did more digging too( i think there is still more to go till we can put the damp proofing down). We also have a skip coming on Friday to get rid of all the soil and debris from the build so far.

11.06.09 Guttering

It was another great day today. We set about cleaning the corrugated roof above the screenprint space, to prepare the surface good for patching up with a special sealing tape, which is like bitumen on a roll and a special black rubber paint to stop the roof from leaking. It was nice being up there in the evening sun. We now probably have the cleanest roof in Hollingdean. What I think is really great about this project is that most of us are a bunch of amateurs at this sort of practical work, but all are giving it a go (with the guidance and advice of people who do know) because we really want to make this happen. So technically today we have done what is called guttering. I am learning so much in a very satisfactory way, I came to Coachwerks in the hope of learning new skills like diy in a hands on way and I'm definitely getting my fill of it.

10.06.09 Building and Digging

Hello everybody,
This is the first post of the PRINTING WERKS blog. A new home to keep everyone updated on the progress we are making in getting our new screen printing studio up and running!

07.06.09 Building and Digging Day #1
The sun was shining as the group began digging to clear away the soil that had been causing the back wall to get damp. This was pretty heavy going and very dirty but quite a lot of soil was moved and hedge and honeysuckle cleared.

We are hoping the soil will be ok to reuse in the planters but it will need sifting to remove large bits of rubble and debris. Sadly most of the soil that was dug on Sunday maybe contaminated with asbestos, so it looks like we may have to separate any further soil that is dug up.

Inside the space, work was done on finishing plaster boarding the back wall, also a start was made on the building of the frame work for the wall that will separate our Print studio from the main building. Time ran out very quickly that day so the rest of the framework build for the 4th wall will be carried on next Sunday the 14th! ( fingers crossed we may even have ideas about the windows by then too!)

A big thanks to everyone that has helped so far we have made amazing progress and things are slowly beginning to take shape.
